Orthoceras in Matrix – 7–10 cm

Discover a remarkable piece of prehistory with this fossil Orthoceras from Morocco, beautifully displayed in its original matrix.

Orthoceras is the common name for fossils of extinct, straight-shelled cephalopods that inhabited the oceans hundreds of millions of years ago. These remarkable marine animals were related to the modern nautilus and lived in elongated shells consisting of several chambers.

In these specimens, the rock surrounding the fossil has been partially removed, beautifully highlighting the characteristic shape of the shell. The fossil itself has been carefully polished, while the surrounding rock retains its natural, rough appearance.

The regularly shaped chambers and fine fossil structures are clearly visible. The smooth fossil creates a beautiful contrast with the robust, dark gray matrix.

Thanks to the flat underside, these fossils can be placed securely on a desk, cabinet, or in a natural history collection.

Each specimen is unique and bears the traces of millions of years of geological history.
